Getting ready for baby's arrival can be fun and exciting, but what about mom's needs? And dad's, for that matter? Find out what to bring to the hospital for labor.

One of the many preparations women make in their final weeks of pregnancy is the "labor bag:" a collection of necessities, essentials, and nice-to-have items that are meant to make Mom as comfortable as possible, under the circumstances. Many pregnancy advice sites recommend also packing a bag for Dad or the birth coach, storing items for during labor in one bag, and items meant for postpartum in another.

The Labor Bag

Some basic items might be required during labor to keep Mom comfortable and sane. Other items can be stored elsewhere for after baby's arrival. Here are some must-haves:

  • a picture ID, insurance card, hospital paperwork, and a birth plan (if being used)
  • basic toiletries (toothpaste, tooth brush, lip balm, deodorant, hair brush and elastics or headband, soap and shampoo if desired
  • comfortable clothes (if hospital allows Mom to wear her own clothes) like nightgowns, bathrobe and slippers, and extra pairs of socks
  • comforting items like a favorite pillow, iPod filled with favorite music, pictures, magazines, or a back massager
  • water bottles for ice chips

The Postpartum Bag

Once baby has arrived, the stay in the hospital may be a very short one. Still, it can be made as comfortable as possible with some good prior planning. Remember to bring the following items:

  • a clean nightgown and fresh set of clothes to travel home in
  • a list of people to call with the announcement and cell phone or calling card
  • snacks to eat between hospital meals in case Mom is starving
  • nursing bras or comfortable regular bras and maternity underwear
  • a book on newborn care, a journal and a pen (if desired), and a baby book for hand and footprints on delivery day
  • baby's going home outfit and a receiving blanket, especially if it's winter time

The Coach's Bag

Even though he or she won't be the one in labor, Mom's partner or birth coach could benefit from a few wisely selected items. They'll be sure to appreciate the thoughtfulness of having their own bag packed and ready to go.

  • a camera or video camera with batteries, charger, and an empty memory card (or film)
  • comfortable shoes and a change of clothes
  • favorite snacks and something to read
  • money for parking and change for a vending machine
  • basic toiletries (don't forget a toothbrush!)
  • a bathing suit, in case Mom wants to take a shower during delivery and needs someone to support her or rub her back

Other Things to Think About

Before bringing baby home, there are some things to prepare in advance for a safe and comfortable journey. Take a moment to install the car seat before going into labor and bring any hats, coats and blankets that might be needed to keep baby warm.

There are also some things that should be left at home, such as valuables that could be lost or damaged. Don't pack jewelry, lots of cash or other expensive items. In addition, hospitals will provide medications, diapers, and a breast pump (if required), as well as mesh underwear and maxi pads, so don't waste space in the bag with these items.
