Before entering the labor and delivery room, create a birth plan. There is more to planning than one might expect. Explore options, be honest, and expect the unexpected.

Expecting a baby? Have a birth plan? Before entering the labor and delivery room, many parents create a birth plan. Deciding on how that precious bundle will come into the world is a major stepping stone in the lives of parents-to-be. A common concern for pregnant women is the pain of childbirth, which leads to the question, to epidural or not to epidural? But is that really the only question?

While epidurals are a hot button issue among pregnant women and mothers alike, there really is more to planning the birth of a baby than one might expect. Explore the many options, be honest, and expect the unexpected.

Exploring the Options

The first step in creating a birth plan is for the mother-to-be to get on the same page with her spouse, or someone else important in her life, like a family member. Sit down and discuss the many options. Those options include, but are not limited to, freedom of movement during labor, induction of labor, the use of pain medication, and the father cutting the umbilical cord.

The next step in creating a birth plan is for the mother-to-be to discuss her ideas, beliefs, requests, and concerns with her doctor. The doctor will know the medical history of the mother-to-be, and will be equipped to answer any and all questions his patient will have about labor and delivery. A woman’s doctor is an excellent source of information and comfort during this time, so do not hesitate to ask as many questions as needed.

Honesty is the Best Policy

Be open and honest about concerns with, as well as requests for, the birthing process. Once labor begins, details like lighting and music in the labor and delivery room may get lost in the shuffle. If everyone involved in the birthing process knows the desires of the mother-to-be, labor and delivery can and should run much more smoothly.

Expect the Unexpected

Sometimes, no matter how much planning is involved, not everything runs smoothly when it comes to having a baby. The most important aspect of any birth plan is to know that plans change, and it is normal. Go with the flow. The best outcome is a healthy baby and a healthy mommy. When expecting a baby, never forget to expect the unexpected.
